My guest spot at the home of KD Grace and Grace Marshall

Please drop by here to see the lovely pics!

Thank you so much for hosting me on your blog, KD. It’s great to be here and to share about my new release with you and your readers. Veronica COURTESAN is inspired by the life of Veronica Franco, one of the most sought-after courtesans in 16th Century Venice, who was also a poet and writer. She was well-educated at a time in history when most women were barely literate. Yes, she was a self-promoter, but she also loved deeply and was loved in return. In the following excerpt, Veronica is entertaining two of her patrons, aiming to be invited to a literary salon. There she meets Domenico Venier, who becomes her editor. Even in the 16th Century, having an editor was vital to a writer. I don’t know how I would manage without mine, the fantastic John Hudspith, who also worked with me on my time-slip historical romance Lady of Asolo.

 Excerpt

We make polite conversation throughout the meal, but, as soon as we progress to the portego for after-dinner drinks and entertainment, I get right to the point. ‘My lord, Signor Ludovico tells me you frequent a literary salon.’

‘That’s right. Domenico Venier’s. ’Tis the most important gathering place for intellectuals and writers in Venice.’

‘Are courtesans welcome there?’

‘I’ve noticed a few. Why?’

I’m seized by a sudden shyness. Will he think I’m being forward? Thankfully, Ludovico answers for me.

‘I’ve told you about Veronica’s abilities. Don’t tease the girl!’

The count laughs and drains his glass. I reach across to refill it, my gaze meeting his. ‘I write poetry. My greatest desire
is to learn from others and improve my own work.’

‘Will you read me one of your poems?’

‘With pleasure.’ I go to my desk and return with the verse on which I’m now working.

‘If you are overcome by love for me,

Take me in far sweeter fashion

Than anything my quill can describe.

Your love can be the steadfast knot that pulls me towards you,

Joined to you more tightly than a nail in hard wood;

Your love can make you master of my life,

Show me the love I’ve asked for from you,

And you’ll then enjoy my sweetness to the full.’

‘Very good!’ Andrew Tron rises from his chair and bows. ‘You have talent, Signora Veronica. I shall be delighted to introduce you to Venier. Pray tell me, in what far sweeter fashion can a man take you than your quill can describe?’

I laugh. ‘Ah, that’s something I have yet to discover – which is why my quill cannot describe it.’

Ludovico, who has been watching us up until now, his lips twitching with mirth, gets up from his chair and goes to close the door. ‘Shall we try and give this lady the sweetness she desires?’

My jaw drops. The count’s blue eyes look into mine. He inclines his head and gives a lopsided grin. Intrigued, I glance from one to the other.

Ludovico unbuttons my skirt. Under it, I’m wearing my breeches. He cups my buttocks, and wetness floods me. ‘What say you?’

I pretend to consider, although I know the answer already. ‘I say, yes.’

Veronica COURTESAN

I watch him watching us, imagining how he would take me.

I send him the message with my eyes. This is who I am. I am Veronica Franco. I am a COURTESAN.

I court the cultural elite for fame and fortune, giving my body to many.  And I’m good. So very good. After all, I was taught by my mother, and mother always knows best.

How else to please the future King of France than with the imaginative use of Murano glass? How else to fulfil the desires of all yet keep my sense of self-worth?

But when disaster strikes and my life begins to unravel, I’ll have to ask myself one question: Is it too late to give my
heart to just one man?

Set in Venice 16th Century.

Advisory: sensuously erotic. 18+

My interview on “Books and Banter” today.

You can read the interview and see the lovely pics here.

I AM PLEASED TO WELCOME AUTHOR

Siobhan Daiko

BANTER – STUFF ABOUT YOU

BIO

Siobhan Daiko is an author of romantic historical fiction and a new series of erotic novellas featuring famous courtesans – strong women who held their own in a man’s world. A lover of all things Italian, Siobhan lives in the Veneto region of northern Italy with her husband and two cats. After a life of romance and adventure in Hong Kong, Australia and the UK she now spends her time, when she isn’t writing, enjoying the dolce vita near Venice.

I’ve told everyone that you would be here today, so let’s get on with the interview!

Q: How would you describe yourself as a color? Think personality here. Are you a light and airy pastel person, or more of a deep, dark, sultry and mysterious color?

A: Purple (balanced with magenta). I’m a bit of a free spirit and I tend to look at the world through rose-tinted glasses.

Q: Are you a morning person, or a midnight candle burner?

A: Definitely not a morning person. At least not until I’ve had coffee. I suppose you could call me a night-owl, especially when gripped by my writing and/or reading a good book.

Q: Tell me something you would like your readers (fans) to know about you.

A: I’m a bookaholic, chocaholic cat lady. I love reading about love, sex and Murano glass. Addicted to chocolate, I have to ration myself or I would be twice my current size. We brought two cats with us to Italy from the UK and I’m a real slave to them.

Q: If you don’t mind me asking, why do you enjoy reading about Murano glass?

A: Veronica, my latest heroine, uses it in the most imaginative way. I enjoyed the research. 😉

BOOKS – ABOUT THE CRAFT

Q: When did you start writing and why?

A: When the empty-nest syndrome kicked in after my son left home. I quickly became hooked and now I can’t imagine doing anything else. It completes me.

Q: Where do you get your ideas?

A: From real historical characters. I love to imagine their lives and always ask myself, ‘what if?’ as the basis for my storylines.

Q: How did you come to write your genera of choice?

A: After I’d published Lady of Asolo – a time-slip historical romance set partly in 16th Century Venice – I was chatting with my editor, John Hudspith, about what to write next. He suggested I play to my strengths, which, for him, was the way I conveyed gritty realism when writing the erotic scenes in Lady of Asolo. ‘Great writing,’ he said. ‘You must do more!’ Now I’ve started writing erotica I feel as if I’ve fallen on my feet. I love it.

Q: What is your favorite part of writing?

A: When I get to the final draft and start working with my editor. He’s caring, instructive, encouraging, funny (sometimes rolling on the floor hilarious) and he’s a hard taskmaster when he needs to be. I have absolute faith in him and have learned to trust in his excellent suggestions completely.

Q: How do you handle a writer’s block?

A: I set a daily word count and don’t let myself stop writing until I have reached it. Sometimes it happens quickly and I write on past my goal. At other times it can take all day, but I’m very strict with myself and keep at it until I reach my target.

Q: Do you always know how a story will end when you begin writing it?

A: Always. I write a working synopsis, which can (and usually does) change as I write the story, but the final scene is set in concrete and everything leads up to it.

BOOKS – NOW LETS PROMOTE – STRUT YOUR STUFF

Q: What are you working on now? Would you like to share anything about it?

A: Theodora COURTESAN. It’s set in 6th Century Constantinople and is inspired by Theodora, a courtesan who has a passionate relationship with the most powerful man in the word: the Emperor’s nephew and heir apparent.

Q: Do you have a new book coming out soon? Tell us about it.

A: Veronica COURTESAN. (I’ve just, and I mean in the last few days, revamped the title and cover.) Based on the true story of Veronica Franco, the most sought- after courtesan in 16th Century Venice. She was also a writer, which made me feel an affinity with her. When I read her poems and letters, I was struck by the force of Veronica’s feisty, forward personality and decided she would make the perfect protagonist. She had a string of lovers, but there was one man, a fellow-poet, with whom she had the most amorous affair. His poems to her are published in her Terze Rime in the form of a poetic debate, and I enjoyed adapting them and using them as repartee between the two characters. Writing an erotic novella about a woman who practised ‘free love’ has been a lot of fun. She was a talented seductress, able to create desire in her patrons under her own terms. I’m sure she loved each and every one of them in her own way, as evidenced by this quote from one of her poems:

“So fragrant and delightful do I become, when I am in bed with someone who, I feel, adores and appreciates me, that the joy I bring exceeds all pleasure, so the ties of love, however close they seemed before, are knotted tighter still.”

In The Chair 30

Meet my lovely writer friend, Jade West.

janruthblog

Welcome, Jade West.

How would you describe your writing style in only three words?

Jade: Dirty. Bad. Wrong.

11070812_342602802600111_5687278489061541525_n

If you could have a relationship with one of your fictional characters who would it be and why?

Jade: James / Masque. I’d enjoy the sex with him more than Callum, although I’d adopt Callum’s dog, Casey, any day.

If you had to exist for a week in one of your books … which one would it be? Would you be a central character or simply watch the story unfold from the sidelines?

Jade: I’d exist happily for a week in Dirty Bad Wrong as club Explicit. As for being a central character or watching from the sidelines, it depends how much I’d had to drink.

Dead or alive literary dinner party: who would you invite, and what would you serve?

Jade: This is the hardest question so far! I have so many…

Siobhan Daiko: A Titillating Author to Explore during Droughtlander

I’m honored to be featured on Buzzard’s Eye View today.

Buzzard's Eye View

Picture 1 Kindle Book Cover of Siobhan Daiko’s Veronica Courtesan

Ahh!  Summertime!  Not the best time for television–all our favorite shows have aired their finales topping each other this season for the most gruesome, the most sensational, the bloodiest, most humiliating drag out pull of emotions that television has ever seen.  Take heart, they’ll be back with more eye-shocking and gut-wrenching visuals next year to compete again to capture the gold for the show that merits the most tweets and Facebook comments.

Picture 2 Paperback cover of Veronica by Siobhan Daiko

In the interim, for those lusting for more of the between the sheets action between the likes of Jamie Frasier and his wife Claire of Outlander fame, why not curl up with a good book that might just titillate your imagination?  Eschew the anodyne idea that a picture is worth a thousand words–put your mind to work and you’ll be piqued by what…

Somebody pinch me!

My lovely writer friend, Jo Bartlett’s debut full-length novel has just been published. So happy for her!

thewriteromantics

book14I know there’s nothing more annoying than someone telling you about the dream they had last night, but bear with me please, or perhaps that should be ‘bare’ with me given the nature of the dream…

It was one of those almost nightmarish scenarios where you realise you are totally exposed. It wasn’t quite as bad as the recurring dream my friend has about pushing a shopping trolley around Morrisons, in her birthday suit, but it was bad enough. Somehow, in my dream, I had got myself a job promoting gym membership. Now trust me when I say I wouldn’t be anyone’s first choice to promote their gym. Perhaps I could make it as a ‘before’ photo, but I’ve somehow never got round to getting the necessary physique for the ‘after’ shots. Anyway, I digress. In this dream it was my job to stand in the high street, wearing nothing…

Meet the lovely Jane Dixon-Smith. Not only the designer of fantastic covers but also a brilliant writer.

janruthblog

Welcome, Jane Dixon-Smith.

How would you describe your writing style in only three words?

Jane: Lyrical. Historical. Concise.Award Night Profile Pic 2

If you could have a relationship with one of your fictional characters who would it be and why?

Jane: King Mark from Tristan and Iseult – probably because I feel sorry for him and he’s such a nice bloke. Bamdad from the Overlord series makes me laugh but he’s not someone I could see myself with for more than a year.

If you had to exist for a week in one of your books … which would it be? Would you be a central character or simply watch the story unfold from the sidelines?

Jane: I think I’d have to opt for The second to last book in the Overlord series (not yet written) because I can’t wait to see what happens. I’d have to be a minor character. I’d love to be Zenobia but…
